t I shall beastonished。;
;I am astonished also ─said the General。 ;I haven't an idea in myhead ─And he fell into a reverie察waiting for ideas。
There is a power察a nameless power察in the possession of favorfrom above察the favor of Providence察and this favor little George had。But we are forgetting the birthday。
Emily's room was fragrant with flowers察sent by male and femalefriends察on the table lay beautiful presents for greeting andremembrance察but none could e from George´ none could e fromhim察but it was not necessary察for the whole house was full ofremembrances of him。 Even out of the ash´bin the blossom of memorypeeped forth察for Emily had sat whimpering there on the day when thewindow´curtain caught fire察and George arrived in the character offire engine。 A glance out of the window察and the acacia treereminded of the days of childhood。 Flowers and leaves had fallenbut there stood the tree covered with hoar frost察looking like asingle huge branch of coral察and the moon shone clear and largeamong the twigs察unchanged in its changings察as it was when Georgedivided his bread and butter with little Emily。
Out of a box the girl took the drawings of the Czar's palace andof her own castle´ remembrances of George。 The drawings were lookedat察and many thoughts came。 She remembered the day when察unobserved byher father and mother察she had gone down to the porter's wife wholay dying。 Once again she seemed to sit beside her察holding thedying woman's hand in hers察hearing the dying woman's last words此Blessing George ─The mother was thinking of her son察and now Emilygave her own interpretation to those words。 Yes察George wascertainly with her on her birthday。
It happened that the next day was another birthday in thathouse察the General's birthday。 He had been born the day after hisdaughter察but before her of course´ many years before her。 Manypresents arrived察and among them came a saddle of exquisiteworkmanship察a fortable and costly saddle´ one of the Princes hadjust such another。 Now察from whom might this saddle e拭TheGeneral was delighted。 There was a little note with the saddle。 Now ifthe words on the note had been ;many thanks for yesterday'sreception察─we might easily have guessed from whom it came。 But thewords were ;From somebody whom the General does not know。;
;Whom in the world do I not know拭─exclaimed the General。 ;Iknow everybody察─and his thoughts wandered all through society察for heknew everybody there。 ;That saddle es from my wife ─he said atlast。 ;She is teasing me´ charming
But she was not teasing him察those times were past。
Again there was a feast察but it was not in the General's house察itwas a fancy ball at the Prince's察and masks were allowed too。
The General went as Rubens察in a Spanish costume察with a littleruff round his neck察a sword by his side察and a stately manner。 TheGeneral's lady was Madame Rubens察in black velvet made high roundthe neck察exceedingly warm察and with a mill´stone round her neck inthe shape of a great ruff´ accurately dressed after a Dutch picture inthe possession of the General察in which the hands were especiallyadmired。 They were just like the hands of the General's lady。
Emily was Psyche。 In white crape and lace she was like afloating swan。 She did not want wings at all。 She only wore them asemblematic of Psyche。
Brightness察splendor察light and flowers察wealth and taste appearedat the ball察there was so much to see察that the beautiful hands ofMadame Rubens made no sensation at all。
A black domino察with an acacia blossom in his cap察danced withPsyche。
;Who is that拭─asked the General's lady。
;His Royal Highness察─replied the General。 ;I am quite sure of it。I knew him directly by the pressure of his hand。;
The General's lady doubted it。
General Rubens had no doubts about it。 He went up to the blackdomino and wrote the royal letters in the mask's hand。 These weredenied察but the mask gave him a hint。
The words that came with the saddle此 One whom you do not knowGeneral。;
;But I do know you察─said the General。 ;It was you who sent me thesaddle。;
The domino raised his hand察and disappeared among the otherguests。
;Who is that black domino with whom you were dancing察Emily拭asked the General's lady。
;I did not ask his name察─she replied察 because you knew it。 It isthe Professor。 Your protege is here察Count ─she continued察turning tothat nobleman察who stood close by。 ;A black domino with acaciablossoms in his cap。;
;Very likely察my dear lady察─replied the Count。 ;But one of thePrinces wears just the same costume。;
;I knew the pressure of the hand察─said the General。 ;The saddlecame from the Prince。 I am so certain of it that I could invite thatdomino to dinner。;
;Do so。 If it be the Prince he will certainly e察─replied theCount。
;And if it is the other he will not e察─said the General察andapproached the black domino察who was just speaking with the King。The General gave a very respectful invitation ;that they might makeeach other's acquaintance察─and he smiled in his certaintyconcerning the person he was inviting。 He spoke loud and distinctly。
The domino raised his mask察and it was George。 ;Do you repeat yourinvitation察General拭─he asked。
The General certainly seemed to grow an inch taller察assumed amore stately demeanor察and took two steps backward and one stepforward察as if he were dancing a minuet察and then came as much gravityand expression into the face of the General as the General couldcontrive to infuse into it察but he replied
;I never retract my words You are invited察Professor ─and hebowed with a glance at the King察who must have heard the wholedialogue。
Now察there was a pany to dinner at the General's察but onlythe old Count and his protege were invited。
;I have my foot under his table察─thought George。 ;That's layingthe foundation stone。;
And the foundation stone was really laid察with great ceremonyat the house of the General and of the General's lady。
The man had e察and had spoken quite like a person in goodsociety察and had made himself very agreeable察so that the Generalhad often to repeat his ;Charming ─The General talked of this dinnertalked of it even to a court lady察and this lady察one of the mostintellectual persons about the court察asked to be invited to meetthe Professor the next time he should e。 So he had to be invitedagain察and he was invited察and came察and was charming again察hecould even play chess。
;He's not out of the cellar察─said the General察 he's quite adistinguished person。 There are many distinguished persons of thatkind察and it's no fault of his。;
The Professor察who was received in the King's palace察might verywell be received by the General察but that he could ever belong tothe house was out of the question察only the whole town was talkingof it。
He grew and grew。 The dew of favor fell from above察so no onewas surprised after all that he should bee a Privy Councillorand Emily a Privy Councillor's lady。
;Life is either a tragedy or a edy察─said the General。 ;Intragedies they die察in edies they marry one another。;
In this case they married。 And they had three clever boys´ but notall at once。
The sweet children rode on their hobby´horses through all therooms when they came to see the grandparents。 And the General alsorode on his stick察he rode behind them in the character of groom tothe little Privy Councillors。
And the General's lady sat on her sofa and smiled at them察evenwhen she had her severest headache。
So far did George get察and much further察else it had not beenworth while to tell the story of THE PORTER'S SON。
THE END。

FAIRY TALES OF HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN
THE PORTUGUESE DUCK
by Hans Christian Andersen
A DUCK once arrived from Portugal察but there were some who saidshe came from Spain察which is almost the same thing。 At all eventsshe was called the ;Portuguese察─and she laid eggs察was killed察andcooked察and there was an end of her。 But the ducklings which creptforth from the eggs were also called ;Portuguese察─and about thatthere may be some question。 But of all the family one only remained inthe duckyard察which may be called a farmyard察as the chickens wereadmitted察and the cock strutted about in a very hostile manner。 ;Heannoys me with his loud crowing察─said the Portuguese duck察 butstill察he's a handsome bird察there's no denying that察although he'snot a drake。 He ought to moderate his voice察like those little birdswho are singing in the lime´trees over there in our neighbor's gardenbut that is an art only acquired in polite society。 How sweetly theysing there察it is quite a pleasure to listen to them I call itPortuguese singing。 If I had only such a little singing´bird察I'd bekind and good as a mother to him察for it's in my nature察in myPortuguese blood。;
While she was speaking察one of the little singing´birds cametumbling head over heels from the roof into the yard。 The cat wasafter him察but he had escaped from her with a broken wing察and so cametumbling into the yard。 ;That's just like the cat察she's a villain察said the Portuguese duck。 ;I remember her ways when I had childrenof my own。 How can such a creature be allowed to live察and wanderabout upon the roofs。 I don't think they allow such things inPortugal。; She pitied the little singing´bird察and so did all theother ducks who were not Portuguese。
;Poor little creature ─they said察one after another察as they cameup。 ;We can't sing察certainly察but we have a sounding´board察orsomething of the kind察within us察we can feel that察though we don'ttalk about it。;
;But I can talk察─said the Portuguese duck察 and I'll do somethingfor the little fellow察it's my duty察─and she stepped into thewater´trough察and beat her wings upon the water so strongly that thebird was nearly drowned by a shower´bath察but the duck meant itkindly。 ;That is a good deed察─she said察 I hope the others willtake example by it。;
;Tweet察tweet ─said the little bird察for one of his wings beingbroken察he found it difficult to shake himself察but he quiteunderstood that the bath was meant kindly察and he said察 You arevery kind´hearted察madam察─but he did not wish for a second bath。
;I have never thought about my heart察─replied the Portugueseduck察 but I know that I love all my fellow´creatures察except the catand nobody can expect me to love her察for she ate up two of myducklings。 But pray make yourself at home察it is easy to make one'sself fortable。 I am myself from a foreign country察as you may seeby my feathery dress。 My drake is a native of these parts察he's not ofmy race察but I am not proud on that account。 If any one here canunderstand you察I may say positively I am that person。;
;She's quite full of 'Portulak'; said a little mon duck察whowas witty。 All the mon ducks considered the word ;Portulak; agood joke察for it sounded like Portugal。 They nudged each other察andsaid察 Quack that was witty
Then the other ducks began to notice the little bird。 ;ThePortuguese had certainly a great flow of language察─they said to thelittle bird。 ;For our part we don't care to fill our beaks with suchlong words察but we sympathize with you quite as much。 If we don't doanything else察we can walk about with you everywhere察and we thinkthat is the best thing we can do。;
;You have a lovely voice察─said one of the eldest ducks察 itmust be great satisfaction to you to be able to give so muchpleasure as you do。 I am certainly no judge of your singing so Ikeep my beak shut察which is better than talking nonsense察as othersdo。;
;Don't plague him so察interposed the Portuguese duck察 he requiresrest and nursing。 My little singing´bird do you wish me to prepareanother bath for you拭
;Oh察no no pray let me dry察─implored the little bird。
;The water´cure is the only remedy for me察when I am not well察said the Portuguese。 ;Amusement察too察is very beneficial。 The fowlsfrom the neighborhood will soon be here to pay you a visit。 Thereare two Cochin Chinese amongst them察they wear feathers on their legsand are well educated。 They have been brought from a great distanceand consequently I treat them with greater respect than I do theothers。;
Then the fowls arrived察and the cock was polite enough to´day tokeep from being rude。 ;You are a real songster察─he said察 you do asmuch with your little voice as it is possible to do察but thererequires more noise and shrillness in any one who wishes it to beknown who he is。;
The two Chinese were quite enchanted with the appearance of thesinging´bird。 His feathers had been much ruffled by his bath察sothat he seemed to them quite like a tiny Chinese fowl。 ;He'scharming察─they said to each other察and began a conversation withhim in whispers察using the most aristocratic Chinese dialect此 Weare of the same race as yourself察─they said。 ;The ducks察even thePortuguese察are all aquatic birds察as you must have noticed。 You donot know us yet察 very few know us察or give themselves the troubleto make our acquaintance察not even any of the fowls察though we areborn to occupy a higher grade in society than most of them。 But thatdoes not disturb us察we quietly go on in our own way among the restwhose ideas are certainly not ours察for we look at the bright sideof things察and only speak what is good察although that is sometimesvery difficult to find where none exists。 Except ourselves and thecock there is not one in the yard who can be called talented orpolite。 It cannot even be said of the ducks察and we warn you察littlebird察not to trust that one yonder察with the short tail feathersfor she is cunning察that curiously marked one察with the crookedstripes on her wings察is a mischief´maker察and never lets any one havethe last word察though she is always in the wrong。 That fat duck yonderspeaks evil of every one察and that is against our principles。 If wehave nothing good to tell察we close our beaks。 The Portuguese is theonly one who has had any education察and with whom we can associatebut she is passionate察and talks too much about 'Portugal。';
;I wonder what those two Chinese are whispering about察whispered one duck to another察 they are always doing it察and itannoys me。 We never speak to them。;
Now the drake came up察and he thought the little singing´birdwas a sparrow。 ;Well察I don't understand the difference察─he said察 itappears to me all the same。 He's only a plaything察and if peoplewill have playthings察why let them察I say。;
;Don't take any notice of what he says察─whispered the Portuguese察he's very well in matters of business察and with him business isplaced before everything。 But now I shall lie down and have a littlerest。 It is a duty we owe to ourselves that we may be nice and fatwhen we e to be embalmed with sage and onions and apples。; So shelaid herself down in the sun and winked with one eye察she had a veryfortable place察and felt so fortable that she fell asleep。 Thelittle singing´bird busied himself for some time with his broken wingand at last he lay down察too察quite close to his protectress。 Thesun shone warm and bright察and he found out that it was a very goodplace。 But the fowls of the neighborhood were all awake察and察totell the truth察they had paid a visit to the duckyard察simply andsolely to find food for themselves。 The Chinese were the first toleave察and the other fowls soon followed them。
The witty little duck said of the Portuguese察that the
