appen as your wish拭You must learn to endure something that does not go on your way。 ̄ ^The New Oriental said I could live in a threeperson room so that I can make more friends察but ´ ̄ I murmured察but was interrupted by mom此 What拭院 No察nothing察I was saying your instructions are correct。 ̄ Seeing her look was stern察I added quickly。 ^That¨s more like it。 ̄ Said mom察smiling察 Don¨t be too selfcentered察remember察you need friends when we are departed。 ̄ I nodded as my answer。
The next thing that nearly drove me crazy was I barely lost the receipt made out by the hotel manager。 Without it察I won¨t be able to prove how many days I had paid and ask for the deposit。 Finally察I manage to get it out of a pile of changes。 I felt it really necessary to take good care of the important things such as receipts察identification card and credit card。 I swear I won¨t be so careless any more。
Mom is right。 Anyway察I need to grow up and be mature察to change myself into a socialized person。

 Watching movies
 Friday察July 27察2007
Movies play an important role in my English progress。 I used to step into a wrong idea of English learning此thinking that doing exercises as many as possible will certainly improve my English。 For this reason察before the English petition which took place in my second year in junior high school察I did plenty of exercise察dreaming of getting the first prize。 But the reality was fierce此I missed it by two points。 After a sorrowful weep察sanity controlled me and I began to think about my flaws in the preparation。 Then I realized that maybe my methods were not so effective and my English was still too poor。 I needed to cheer up and find another effective way of learning English。 I am not a person who gives up easily察 nothing is impossible ̄ is my belief and I fully understand Rome wasn¨t built in a day。
When I became a junior 3 student察I met Sara察a young and pretty lady from America。 She encouraged me to learn English by watching foreign movies。 I hesitated察for I was junior 3 then察bunches of things required time and energy to deal with。 But I couldn¨t say no to her at the time she lent me six DVDs of Star Wars and urged me to try them。 She knew I love science so she chose the series for me察insisting that I was bound to love them。 Facing her passion察I had to accept them and brought them home。 I didn¨t set finger to them till one night I got tired of the grammar excises and couldn¨t go on察and then I recalled Sara¨s encouragement察so I quickly turned on the puter and began playing the DVD。
I was fascinated by Star Wars。 Its plot and perfect pictures tightly grasped my heart。 For the first time I broke the strict discipline I had obeyed for more than two years察I went to bed unwillingly till the clock showed it was 1240 at night。
From then on察movies became part of my life。 I watched them for about 1 hour every night。 Though I was crazy about it察I knew it is more important to remain sanity。 After all察I still had so much work to deal with察I couldn¨t give up all the others for English。 I clearly know what I should do and always try my best to control myself察though sometimes I still lose control of myself。 For example察when I watched The Matrix during May Day holiday察I couldn¨t stop watching it for 7 hours till the end。 Mom scolded me for watching too long even for learning English。 She warned me of progress in my Math察Chemistry and Physics察saying that I ought to spend more time on them since the exam of HSFZ is looming took place on May 13th。 I didn¨t talk back because I knew I was too crazy about it to stop watching and I knew I was wrong。
Anyway察despite the fact that watching movies sometimes wears you out察I still consider it a wonderful way of learning English because it is far more interesting察lively and exciting than other ways of learning English。 But my advice is此doing so needs great self discipline。

 Exploration of the Ma´
Talking about my favorite movie察definitely it is The Matrix。 There are three DVDs in all察and each of them lasts 34 hours。 When I first watched the first episode I could barely resist the impulse to finish it right away察and once I came to the last two察I totally indulged myself in it and finished it after a sevenhour watching。
I consider it to be an amazing film察no wonder some websites introduce students use The Matrix to improve both oral English and understanding of English察for it owns an extremely plex and confusing plot and significant dialogues。 In order to fully understand it察I took the trouble of taking down all the conversations on a note book察so I had to pause the film anytime to copy the subtitles。 Because of its plex story察I still had trouble understanding it。 The sentences of this movie are a play on words察which contain more than one meaning。
For example察I clearly remember at the beginning of the film察Mr。 Anderson察who is known to us as Neo察the chosen one察wasn¨t aware of his special power。 One day he woke up察and a sentence ^Follow the rabbit。 ̄ appeared on his screen 察a group of people turned out and asked him to join a party。 He wanted to refuse at first察but once he saw a rabbit tattooed on a woman¨s arm who revealed it on purpose察he changed his mind at once。 Afterwards察he met his girlfriend Trinity。 It was when the real exciting story started。
How e the story happened later related to ^rabbit ̄拭What does ^follow the rabbit ̄ mean拭The questions kept obsessing me and drove me to consult all the dictionaries I could find。 I reckoned ^rabbit ̄ may have the meaning of ^clue ̄ at first察but I failed to prove my own guess。 The dictionaries simply provided one explanation saying that it means ^a small longeared animal that lives in a hole in the ground ̄。 ^Rabbit ̄ here absolutely had its unique meaning察and its general meaning ^rabbit ̄ had nothing to do with the plot。 This made me much more puzzled。
Not giving up easily察I called Brenda who is my another foreign teacher and asked her about this detail。 She chuckled on the other side of the line察saying此 Clara察think of a famous fiction named `Alice¨s Adventures in Wonderland¨察how did Alice get to wonderland拭院After a long pause of silence察I yelled in excitement此 That rabbit ̄ ^You got it ̄ said Brenda。 ^Now do you know the other meaning of `follow the rabbit¨拭院 Yeah ̄ answered I hastily察 It hinted that Neo was going to be led to the true world and know his real identity and destiny。 ̄
Besides this part of The Matrix察there are several parts using this fiction to pun on words。 For instance察when Neo was introduced to meet Morpheus察Morpheus showed him two pills察one red察and the other blue。 ^Take the blue pill察and you wake up on your bed tomorrow and believe every thing you believe察take the red one察I¨ll show you how deep the rabbit hole is。 ̄ The words above was quoted from the film察and the last sentence of Morpheus implied that he would tell Neo the truth about the world they lived which was a virtual wonderland created by puters察and the machines had taken control of the world for a long time。 Obviously察 rabbit hole ̄ refers to truth here。
Further more察the names in this film are significant察too。 The one that named the characters apparently wanted to show us with some clues through these deliberately chosen names。 Take ^Morpheus ̄ for an example。 It is the name of god of the dream from classical legends。 The name ^Trinity ̄ also has its own religious meaning。
Unfortunately察Brenda left abruptly with the three DVDs I lent her察so I could not keep the film。 My only memory for The Matrix is my notebook that contains almost all the conversations of it。 I treat it as my priceless treasure。

 The first TOEFL class
 Saturday察July 28察2007
The courses of TOEFL iBT finally began after I had expected it for such a long time。 The first thing I got to do is to get new books。 When Ellen and I went into a small room near our classroom and showed the woman in charge of our listening certificate察our hands were full of loads of books in an instant moment。 There were seven huge and thick books including a series of four books for the four sections in TOEFL iBT察an advanced skill practice for the iBT察an official guide and a preparation course for TOEFL iBT察plus more than 30 CDs察it would certainly make you in despair。 But the motto of the New Oriental is ^Hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope and you can make your life a splendid one。 ̄ ^OK察I will try察院I thought。 ^But you have to tell me how察do you拭
The teacher who taught our spoken English is John察a talkative察humorous man with a look a little like foreigners。
In class察he taught us how to make through independent speaking task and also encouraged students to speak before the class on some chosen topics。 I don¨t know what I was afraid of察for most of the class spoke much more poorly than I did。 But still察I didn¨t dare to stand up and say此 John察can I have a try拭院Now I am aware of my fault察。此wanting to be perfect is not wrong察but one should not let the thought block one¨s way。 Stopping talking because of being afraid of making mistakes surely guarantees you a nonmistake performance察but fluency in English is bound to be a daydream for you。
The next day at the same time察again John asked us to answer the question此 Should film or television be censored or should we be free to choose what we like to see拭Express your opinion and include details in your explanation。 ̄ I stood up bravely and spoke aloud before the whole class。 I said that although censorship keeps vulgarity and violence away from children察it deprives children¨s ability of judging for themselves。 Also in a country察abusive censorship may be used by some people to manipulate viewers¨ values。 After my speech察there was an explosion of applause which instilled content and confidence into my body。
Now I know that you never lose by trying察you only lose by holding back。 From now on察I will wipe off my shyness and be a person full of selfconfidence。

 Future warrior
 Wednesday察August 01察2007
These days I was extremely depressed because of two reasons此one is that I found my English level was way too far from TOEFL察the other is that time is not under my control。
The goal I set up for myself is to get at least 100 points in TOEFL iBT which is a great mark acknowledged by the public for the students who major in English。 Further more察the emphasis on munication in an academic setting makes it more difficult and challenging than the previous versions。 Therefore察my level seems too poor to achieve the goal。
Yesterday察our oral English teacher John asked us to try the first type of integrated speaking of which description on the OG official guide is like this此 You read an announcement or notice related to an aspect of university life and then hear two students discuss the written notice。 Then you report what the notice was and what one of the students thought about it。 ̄ The first exercise he asked us to do was about a curriculum change in core course requirement to plete a BFA Bachelor of Fine Arts in music at Midtown University。 Because I was not familiar with this topic察I couldn¨t get the useful information immediately from the reading and listening passage。 Then the interesting oral English became an agony for me to suffer from。
Giving in to difficulty doesn¨t agree with my personality察so I made a reading plan for myself。 The reading materials were chosen from a TOEFL reading book which is related to the topics I was not familiar with。
Today察Dennis察the man who teaches us reading察told us about his experience of preparing for GRE。 He said he rent a house near his university with his partner and began his life as an ascetic。 That was the way of life allowing no physical pleasures。 Every meal was done by instant noodles察which causes him to feel sick every time he smells instant noodles now。
He also told us about a story of his classmate。 That guy has such a passion for his major that he can devote himself to it。 At last he successfully got the application letter from his dreaming university MIT。 The guy was given a name ^Future warrior ̄ by his friends because all the things he did then was for his future and major。
Well察I think察maybe I should also adapt the name ^Future warrior ̄ as a motto to inspire me to carry on fighting for my future。

 Find hope in despair
Monday察August 06察2007Every teacher in the New Oriental is a good storyteller who always let us burst out laughing and get inspiration out of the stories。 Among those stories the events about how the New Oriental was founded gave me the deepest impact。
Before the history was mentioned察Daniel察the man who teaches us writing察talked about an excellent student enrolled by Harvard University with the full scholarship last year in Shanghai。 Not only did that guy get the golden medal for universal Math Olympic petition察but also hold several piano personal concert in his city。 Further more察he was the record holder for 200metre and 1000metre race among high school students in Shanghai。 Besides察he boasts handsome looking。
^Sounds like God gave everything that everyone will be dying for to him。 ̄ Murmured I to my roommate & deskmate Ellen among the astonished students。
^It is not fair察er拭院Obviously Daniel heard my words since I sat in the first row of the class察 Boys should be grateful and delightful that such perfect guy went to America so that the number of your public enemy is reduced by one。 ̄
^Well察just for kidding。 ̄ Realizing the whole class was astounded to dead still察he asked whether we know how the New Oriental was founded at the thought that it was necessary to inspire us instead of sending us to despair。
Yu Minhong察the initiator of the New Oriental was rugged and full of misfortune察traced back to the time when he took the university entrance exam。 Before he was finally enrolled by a University which is among the best universities in China察he took the exam for three times because of many plex reasons。 To his dismay察being enrolled by the university was the beginning of a worse misfortune in his life。 Because of his background of peasant born察no one even would like to talk with him including his teachers who thought he was totally hopeless。 After graduation察he remained in the university and became an English teacher。
Under tremendous pressure of lack of finance察Yu had to be a sneak teacher in a school called Oriental because doing a parttime job was banned according to the rules of the university。 Months later察his behavior was discovered and the university fired him instantly。 Out of his firing察he got thrown by the Oriental察too。 That must be the darkest time in his life while he was out of job and was disdained by everyone around him。
But who could predict that Yu then established his own school and it flourished during the past 15 years察having branches throughout the nation
The story ended and Daniel added此 See拭Whose present is more miserable than Yu拭So what on earth give you the excuses that Nike will never wave to you in wele拭Go for it While there is life察there is hope。 ̄
That accounts for why the school¨s name is ^New Oriental ̄ because Yu wants it to remind him of his tough time before and worn him of luxury。 It also accounts for why the credo of the New Oriental is
