herself。 But I¨d always thought of it as a hyperbole察a traditional description for something that had no
real physiological link察like a green thumb。 So I wasn¨t expecting the pain in my chest。 The nausea察yes察
the swelling in my throat察yes察and察yes察the tears burning in my eyes。 But what was the ripping sensation
just under my rib cage拭It made no logical sense。
And it wasn¨t just ripping察but twisting and pulling in different directions。 Because Melanie¨s heart broke察
too察and it was a separate sensation察as if we¨d grown another organ to pensate for our twin
awarenesses。 A double heart for a double mind。 Twice the pain。
He¨s leavingshe sobbed。We¨ll never see him again。 She didn¨t question the fact that we were going
to die。
I wanted to weep with her察but someone had to keep her head。 I bit my hand to hold the moan back。
^That¨s probably best察院Jeb said。
^I¨ll need to get some things organized。´ ̄ Already Jared¨s mind was far察far away from this
claustrophobic corridor。
^I¨ll take over here察then。 Have a safe trip。 ̄
^Thanks。 Guess I¨ll see you when I see you察Jeb。 ̄
^Guess so。 ̄
Jared handed the gun back to Jeb察stood up察and brushed absently at the dust on his clothes。 Then he
was off察hurrying down the hall with his familiar quick step察his mind on other things。 Not one glance in my
direction察not one more thought for my fate。
I listened to the fading sound of his footsteps until they were gone。 Then察forgetting Jeb¨s existence察I
pressed my face into my hands and sobbed。
CHAPTER 20
Freed
Jeb let me cry myself out without interrupting。 He didn¨t ment all through the following sniffles。 It was
only when I¨d been pletely silent for a good half hour that he spoke。
I didn¨t answer。 I was too much in the habit of silence。
^You want to e out here and stretch拭院he offered。 ^My back is aching just thinking about that stupid
hole。 ̄
Ironically察considering my week of maddening silence察I wasn¨t in the mood for pany。 But his offer
wasn¨t one I could refuse。 Before I could think about it察my hands were pulling me through the exit。
Jeb was sitting with crossed legs on the mat。 I watched him for some reaction as I shook out my arms
and legs and rolled my shoulders察but he had his eyes closed。 Like the time of Jamie¨s visit察he looked
asleep。
How long had it been since I¨d seen Jamie拭And how was he now拭My already sore heart gave a painful
little lurch。
^Feel better拭院Jeb asked察his eyes opening。
I shrugged。
^It¨s going to be okay察you know。 ̄ He grinned a wide察face´stretching grin。 ^That stuff I said to Jared´
Well察I won¨t say Ilied察exactly察because it¨s all true if you look at it from a certain angle察but from
another angle察it wasn¨t so much the truth as it was what he needed to hear。 ̄
I just stared察I didn¨t understand a word of what he was saying。
^Anyway察Jared needs a break from this。 Not from you察kid察院he added quickly察 but from the situation。
He¨ll gain some perspective while he¨s away。 ̄
I wondered how he seemed to know exactly which words and phrases would cut at me。 And察more than
that察why should Jeb care if his words hurt me察or even if my back was aching and throbbing拭His
kindness toward me was frightening in its own way because it was inprehensible。 At least Jared¨s
actions made sense。 Kyle¨s and Ian¨s murder attempts察the doctor¨s cheerful eagerness to hurt
me!these behaviors also were logical。 Not kindness。 What did Jeb want from me
^Don¨t look so glum察院Jeb urged。 ^There¨s a bright side to this。 Jared was being real pigheaded about
you察and now that he¨s temporarily out of the picture察it¨s bound to make things more fortable。 ̄
My eyebrows furrowed as I tried to decide what he meant。
^For example察院he went on。 ^This space here we usually use for storage。 Now察when Jared and the guys
get back察we¨re going to need someplace to put all the stuff they bring home with them。 So we might as
well find a new place for you now。 Something a little bigger察maybe拭Something with a bed拭院He smiled
again as he dangled the carrot in front of me。
I waited for him to snatch it away察to tell me he was joking。
Instead察his eyes!the color of faded blue jeans!became very察very gentle。 Something about the
expression in them brought the lump back to my throat。

 ̄
I found that I couldn¨t doubt the earnest look on his face。 For the second time in an hour察I put my face
in my hands and cried。
He got to his feet and patted me awkwardly on the shoulder。 He didn¨t seem fortable with tears。
^There察there察院he mumbled。
I got control of myself more quickly this time。 When I wiped the wet from my eyes and smiled tentatively
at him察he nodded in approval。
^That¨s a girl察院he said察patting me again。 ^Now察we¨ll have to hang out here until we¨re sure Jared¨s
really gone and can¨t catch us。 ̄ He grinned conspiratorially。 ^Then we¨ll have some fun 院
I remembered that his idea of fun was usually along the lines of an armed standoff。
He chuckled at my expression。 ^Don¨t worry about it。 While we¨re waiting察you might as well try to get
some rest。 I¨ll bet even that skinny mattress would feel pretty good to you right now。 ̄
I looked from his face to the mat on the floor and back。
^Go on察院he said。 ^You look like you could use a good sleep。 I¨ll keep watch over you。 ̄
Touched察new moisture in my eyes察I sank down on the mat and laid my head on the pillow。 It was
heavenly察despite Jeb¨s calling it thin。 I stretched out to my full height察pointing my toes and reaching out
with my fingers。 I heard my joints popping。 Then I let myself wilt into the mattress。 It felt as if it were
hugging me察erasing all the sore spots。 I sighed。
^Does me good to see that察院Jeb muttered。 ^It¨s like an itch you can¨t scratch察knowing someone is
suffering under your own roof。 ̄
He eased himself to the floor a few yards away and started humming quietly。 I was asleep before he¨d
finished the first bar。
When I woke up察I knew that I¨d been solidly asleep for a long time!a longer stretch than I¨d slept
since ing here。 No pains察no frightening interruptions。 I would have felt pretty good察except that
waking on the pillow reminded me that Jared was gone。 It still smelled like him。 And in a good way察not
the way I smelled。
Back to just dreams。Melanie sighed forlornly。
I remembered my dream only vaguely察but I knew it had featured Jared察as was usual when I was able
to sleep deeply enough to dream。
^Morning察kid察院Jeb said察sounding chipper。
I peeled back my lids to look at him。 Had he sat against the wall all night拭He didn¨t look tired察but I
suddenly felt guilty for monopolizing the better acmodations。
^So the guys are long gone察院he said enthusiastically。 ^How ¨bout a tour拭院He stroked the gun slung
through a strap at his waist with an unconscious gesture。
^Now察don¨t turn sissy on me。 Nobody¨s going to bother you。 And you¨ll need to be able to find your
way around eventually。 ̄
He held out a hand to help me up。
I took it automatically察my head spinning as I tried to process what he was saying。 I would need to find
my way around拭Why拭And what did he mean ^eventually ̄拭How long did he expect me to last
He pulled me to my feet and led me forward。
I¨d forgotten what it was like to move through the dark tunnels with a hand guiding me。 It was so
easy!walking barely took any concentration at all。
^Let¨s see察院Jeb murmured。 ^Maybe the right wing first。 Set up a decent place for you。 Then the
kitchens´ ̄ He went on planning his tour察continuing as we stepped through the narrow crevice into the
bright tunnel that led to the even brighter big room。 When the sound of voices reached us察I felt my mouth
go dry。 Jeb kept right on chatting at me察either missing or ignoring my terror。
^I¨ll bet the carrots are sprouted today察院he was saying as he led me into the main plaza。 The light
blinded me察and I couldn¨t see who was there察but I could feel their eyes on me。 The sudden silence was
as ominous as ever。
^Yep察院Jeb answered himself。 ^Now察I always think that looks real pretty。 A nice spring green like that is
a treat to see。 ̄
He stopped and held his hand out察inviting me to look。 I squinted in the direction he gestured察but my
eyes kept darting around the room as I waited for them to adjust。 It took a moment察but then I saw what
he was talking about。 I also saw that there were maybe fifteen people here today察all of them regarding
me with hostile eyes。 But they were busy with something else察too。
The wide察dark square that took up the center of the big cavern was no longer dark。 Half of it was fuzzy
with spring green察just as Jeb had said。 Itwas pretty。 And amazing。
No wonder no one stood on this space。 It was a garden。
^Carrots拭院I whispered。
He answered at normal volume。 ^This half that¨s greening up。 The other half is spinach。 Should be up in a
few days。 ̄
The people in the room had gone back to work察still peeking at me now and then but mostly
concentrating on what they were doing。 It was easy enough to understand their actions!and the big
barrel on wheels察and the hoses!now that I recognized the garden。
^Irrigating拭院I whispered again。
^That¨s right。 Dries out pretty quick in this heat。 ̄
I tugged Jeb¨s sleeve and squinted up at the dazzling light。 ^How拭
Jeb smiled察seeming thrilled with my curiosity。 ^Same way the magicians do it!with mirrors察kid。
Hundreds of ¨em。 Took me long enough to get them all up there。 It¨s nice to have extra hands around
here when they need cleaning。 See察there¨s only four small vents in the ceiling here察and that wasn¨t
enough light for what I had in mind。 What do you think of it拭
He pulled his shoulders back察proud again。
^Brilliant察院I whispered。 ^Astonishing。 ̄
Jeb grinned and nodded察enjoying my reaction。
^Let¨s keep on察院he suggested。 ^Got a lot to do today。 ̄
He led me to a new tunnel察a wide察naturally shaped tube that ran off from the big cave。 This was new
territory。 My muscles all locked up察I moved forward with stiff legs察unbending knees。
Jeb patted my hand but otherwise ignored my nerves。 ^This is mostly sleeping quarters and some
storage。 The tubes are closer to the surface here察so it was easier to get some light。 ̄
He pointed up at a bright察slender crack in the tunnel ceiling overhead。 It threw a hand´sized spot of
white onto the floor。
We reached a broad fork!not really a fork察because there were too many tines。 It was an octopus´like
branching of passageways。
^Third from the left察院he said察and looked at me expectantly。
^Third from the left拭院I repeated。
^That¨s right。 Don¨t forget。 It¨s easy to get lost around here察and that wouldn¨t be safe for you。 Folks¨d
just as soon stab you as send you in the right direction。 ̄
I shuddered。 ^Thanks察院I muttered with quiet sarcasm。
He laughed as if my answer had delighted him。 ^No point in ignoring the truth。 Doesn¨t make it worse to
have it said out loud。 ̄
It didn¨t make it better察either察but I didn¨t say that。 I was beginning to enjoy myself just a little。 It was so
nice to have someone talk to me again。 Jeb was察if nothing else察interesting pany。
^One察two察three察院he counted off察then he led me down the third hallway from the left。 We started
passing round entrances covered by a variety of makeshift doors。 Some were curtained off with
patterned sheets of fabric察others had big pieces of cardboard duct´taped together。 One hole had two
real doors!one red´painted wood察one gray metal!leaning over the opening。
^This is the only space I can think of for now。 The only one that¨s fitted up decent for human habitation。
It will be empty for a few weeks察and we¨ll figure something better out for you by the time it¨s needed
again。 ̄
He folded the screen aside察and a light that was brighter than that in the hallway greeted us。
The room he revealed gave me a strange feeling of vertigo!probably because it was so much taller than
it was wide。 Standing inside it was like standing in a tower or a silo察not that I had ever been in such
places察but those were the parisons Melanie made。 The ceiling察twice as high as the room was wide察
was a maze of cracks。 Like vines of light察the cracks circled around and almost met。 This seemed
dangerous to me!unstable。 But Jeb showed no fear of cave´ins as he led me farther in。
There was a double´sized mattress on the floor察with about a yard of space on three sides of it。 The two
pillows and two blankets twisted into two separate configurations on either half of the mattress made it
look as if this room housed a couple。 A thick wooden pole!something like a rake handle!was braced
horizontally against the far wall at shoulder height with the ends lodged in two of the Swiss cheese holes
in the rock。 Over it were draped a handful of T´shirts and two pairs of jeans。 A wooden stool was flush
with the wall beside the makeshift clothes rack察and on the floor beneath it was a stack of worn
paperback books。
^Who拭院I said to Jeb察whispering again。 This space so obviously belonged to someone that I no longer
felt like we were alone。
^Just one of the guys out on the raid。 Won¨t be back for a while。 We¨ll find you something by then。 ̄
I didn¨t like it!not the room察but the idea of staying in it。 The presence of the owner was strong despite
the simple belongings。 No matter who he was察he would not be happy to have me here。 He would hate it。
Jeb seemed to read my mind!or maybe the expression on my face was clear enough that he didn¨t
have to。
^Now察now察院he said。 ^Don¨t worry about that。 This ismy house察and this is just one of my many guest
rooms。 I say who is and isn¨t my guest。 Right now察you are my guest察and I am offering you this room。 ̄
I still didn¨t like it察but I wasn¨t going to upset Jeb察either。 I vowed that I would disturb nothing察if it
meant sleeping on the floor。
^Well察let¨s keep moving。 Don¨t forget此third from the left察seventh in。 ̄
^Green screen察院I added。
^Exactly。 ̄
Jeb took me back through the big garden room察around the perimeter to the opposite side察and through
the biggest tunnel exit。 When we passed the irrigators察they stiffened and turned察afraid to have me behind
their backs。
^We go even closer to the surface now。 It gets drier察but it gets hotter察too。 ̄
I noticed that almost immediately。 Instead of being steamed察we were now being baked。 The air was less
stuffy and stale。 I could taste the desert dust。
There were more voices ahead。 I tried to steel myself against the inevitable reaction。 If Jeb insisted on
treating me like´ like a human察like a wele guest察I was going to have to get used to this。 No reason
to let it make me nauseous over and over again。 My stomach began an unhappy rolling anyway。
