em of gold。 One察in which theprincess lay察was white察the other was red察and in this Gerda had toseek for little Kay。 She pushed one of the red leaves aside察and saw alittle brown neck。 Oh察that must be Kay She called his name out quiteloud察and held the lamp over him。 The dreams rushed back into the roomon horseback。 He woke察and turned his head round察it was not littleKay The prince was only like him in the neck察still he was youngand pretty。 Then the princess peeped out of her white´lily bed察andasked what was the matter。 Then little Gerda wept and told herstory察and all that the crows had done to help her。

;You poor child察─said the prince and princess察then theypraised the crows察and said they were not angry for what they haddone察but that it must not happen again察and this time they shouldbe rewarded。

;Would you like to have your freedom拭─asked the princess察 orwould you prefer to be raised to the position of court crows察with allthat is left in the kitchen for yourselves拭

Then both the crows bowed察and begged to have a fixed appointmentfor they thought of their old age察and said it would be so fortableto feel that they had provision for their old days察as they called it。And then the prince got out of his bed察and gave it up to Gerda察 hecould do no more察and she lay down。 She folded her little hands察andthought察 How good everyone is to me察men and animals too察─then sheclosed her eyes and fell into a sweet sleep。 All the dreams cameflying back again to her察and they looked like angels察and one of themdrew a little sledge察on which sat Kay察and nodded to her。 But allthis was only a dream察and vanished as soon as she awoke。

The following day she was dressed from head to foot in silk andvelvet察and they invited her to stay at the palace for a few days察andenjoy herself察but she only begged for a pair of boots察and a littlecarriage察and a horse to draw it察so that she might go into the wideworld to seek for Kay。 And she obtained察not only boots察but also amuff察and she was neatly dressed察and when she was ready to go察thereat the door察she found a coach made of pure gold察with thecoat´of´arms of the prince and princess shining upon it like a starand the coachman察footman察and outriders all wearing golden crownson their heads。 The prince and princess themselves helped her into thecoach察and wished her success。 The forest crow察who was now marriedacpanied her for the first three miles察he sat by Gerda's sideas he could not bear riding backwards。 The tame crow stood in thedoor´way flapping her wings。 She could not go with them察because shehad been suffering from headache ever since the new appointment察nodoubt from eating too much。 The coach was well stored with sweetcakes察and under the seat were fruit and gingerbread nuts。;Farewell察farewell察─cried the prince and princess察and littleGerda wept察and the crow wept察and then察after a few miles察the crowalso said ;Farewell察─and this was the saddest parting。 However察heflew to a tree察and stood flapping his black wings as long as he couldsee the coach察which glittered in the bright sunshine。

 FIFTH STORY

 LITTLE ROBBER´GIRL

The coach drove on through a thick forest察where it lighted up theway like a torch察and dazzled the eyes of some robbers察who couldnot bear to let it pass them unmolested。

;It is gold it is gold ─cried they察rushing forward察and seizingthe horses。 Then they struck the little jockeys察the coachman察and thefootman dead察and pulled little Gerda out of the carriage。

;She is fat and pretty察and she has been fed with the kernels ofnuts察─said the old robber´woman察who had a long beard and eyebrowsthat hung over her eyes。 ;She is as good as a little lamb察how niceshe will taste ─and as she said this察she drew forth a shining knifethat glittered horribly。 ;Oh ─screamed the old woman the same momentfor her own daughter察who held her back察had bitten her in the ear。She was a wild and naughty girl察and the mother called her an uglything察and had not time to kill Gerda。

;She shall play with me察─said the little robber´girl察 sheshall give me her muff and her pretty dress察and sleep with me in mybed。; And then she bit her mother again察and made her spring in theair察and jump about察and all the robbers laughed察and said察 See howshe is dancing with her young cub。;

;I will have a ride in the coach察─said the little robber´girland she would have her own way察for she was so self´willed andobstinate。

She and Gerda seated themselves in the coach察and drove away察overstumps and stones察into the depths of the forest。 The littlerobber´girl was about the same size as Gerda察but stronger察she hadbroader shoulders and a darker skin察her eyes were quite black察andshe had a mournful look。 She clasped little Gerda round the waist察andsaid察

;They shall not kill you as long as you don't make us vexed withyou。 I suppose you are a princess。;

;No察─said Gerda察and then she told her all her history察and howfond she was of little Kay。

The robber´girl looked earnestly at her察nodded her head slightlyand said察 They sha'nt kill you察even if I do get angry with youfor I will do it myself。; And then she wiped Gerda's eyes察and stuckher own hands in the beautiful muff which was so soft and warm。

The coach stopped in the courtyard of a robber's castle察the wallsof which were cracked from top to bottom。 Ravens and crows flew in andout of the holes and crevices察while great bulldogs察either of whichlooked as if it could swallow a man察were jumping about察but they werenot allowed to bark。 In the large and smoky hall a bright fire wasburning on the stone floor。 There was no chimney察so the smoke went upto the ceiling察and found a way out for itself。 Soup was boiling ina large cauldron察and hares and rabbits were roasting on the spit。

;You shall sleep with me and all my little animals to´night察─saidthe robber´girl察after they had had something to eat and drink。 So shetook Gerda to a corner of the hall察where some straw and carpetswere laid down。 Above them察on laths and perches察were more than ahundred pigeons察who all seemed to be asleep察although they movedslightly when the two little girls came near them。 ;These all belongto me察─said the robber´girl察and she seized the nearest to herheld it by the feet察and shook it till it flapped its wings。 ;Kissit察─cried she察flapping it in Gerda's face。 ;There sit thewood´pigeons察─continued she察pointing to a number of laths and a cagewhich had been fixed into the walls察near one of the openings。 ;Bothrascals would fly away directly察if they were not closely locked up。And here is my old sweetheart 'Ba' and she dragged out a reindeerby the horn察he wore a bright copper ring round his neck察and was tiedup。 ;We are obliged to hold him tight too察or else he would run awayfrom us also。 I tickle his neck every evening with my sharp knifewhich frightens him very much。; And then the robber´girl drew a longknife from a chink in the wall察and let it slide gently over thereindeer's neck。 The poor animal began to kick察and the littlerobber´girl laughed察and pulled down Gerda into bed with her。

;Will you have that knife with you while you are asleep拭─askedGerda察looking at it in great fright。

;I always sleep with the knife by me察─said the robber´girl。 ;Noone knows what may happen。 But now tell me again all about little Kayand why you went out into the world。;

Then Gerda repeated her story over again察while the wood´pigeonsin the cage over her cooed察and the other pigeons slept。 The littlerobber´girl put one arm across Gerda's neck察and held the knife in theother察and was soon fast asleep and snoring。 But Gerda could not closeher eyes at all察she knew not whether she was to live or die。 Therobbers sat round the fire察singing and drinking察and the old womanstumbled about。 It was a terrible sight for a little girl to witness。

Then the wood´pigeons said察 Coo察coo察we have seen little Kay。A white fowl carried his sledge察and he sat in the carriage of theSnow Queen察which drove through the wood while we were lying in ournest。 She blew upon us察and all the young ones died excepting ustwo。 Coo察coo。;

;What are you saying up there拭─cried Gerda。 ;Where was the SnowQueen going拭Do you know anything about it拭

;She was most likely travelling to Lapland察where there isalways snow and ice。 Ask the reindeer that is fastened up there with arope。;

;Yes察there is always snow and ice察─said the reindeer察 and it isa glorious place察you can leap and run about freely on the sparklingice plains。 The Snow Queen has her summer tent there察but her strongcastle is at the North Pole察on an island called Spitzbergen。;

;Oh察Kay察little Kay ─sighed Gerda。

;Lie still察─said the robber´girl察 or I shall run my knife intoyour body。;

In the morning Gerda told her all that the wood´pigeons hadsaid察and the little robber´girl looked quite serious察and noddedher head察and said察 That is all talk察that is all talk。 Do you knowwhere Lapland is拭─she asked the reindeer。

;Who should know better than I do拭─said the animal察while hiseyes sparkled。 ;I was born and brought up there察and used to run aboutthe snow´covered plains。;

;Now listen察─said the robber´girl察 all our men are gone away察only mother is here察and here she will stay察but at noon she alwaysdrinks out of a great bottle察and afterwards sleeps for a littlewhile察and then察I'll do something for you。; Then she jumped out ofbed察clasped her mother round the neck察and pulled her by the beardcrying察 My own little nanny goat察good morning。; Then her motherfilliped her nose till it was quite red察yet she did it all for love。

When the mother had drunk out of the bottle察and was gone tosleep察the little robber´maiden went to the reindeer察and said察 Ishould like very much to tickle your neck a few times more with myknife察for it makes you look so funny察but never mind察 I will untieyour cord察and set you free察so that you may run away to Laplandbut you must make good use of your legs察and carry this littlemaiden to the castle of the Snow Queen察where her play´fellow is。You have heard what she told me察for she spoke loud enough察and youwere listening。;

Then the reindeer jumped for joy察and the little robber´girllifted Gerda on his back察and had the forethought to tie her on察andeven to give her her own little cushion to sit on。

;Here are your fur boots for you察─said she察 for it will bevery cold察but I must keep the muff察it is so pretty。 However察youshall not be frozen for the want of it察here are my mother's largewarm mittens察they will reach up to your elbows。 Let me put them on。There察now your hands look just like my mother's。;

But Gerda wept for joy。

;I don't like to see you fret察─said the little robber´girl察you ought to look quite happy now察and here are two loaves and a hamso that you need not starve。; These were fastened on the reindeer察andthen the little robber´maiden opened the door察coaxed in all the greatdogs察and then cut the string with which the reindeer was fastenedwith her sharp knife察and said察 Now run察but mind you take goodcare of the little girl。; And then Gerda stretched out her handwith the great mitten on it察towards the little robber´girl察and said察Farewell察─and away flew the reindeer察over stumps and stonesthrough the great forest察over marshes and plains察as quickly as hecould。 The wolves howled察and the ravens screamed察while up in the skyquivered red lights like flames of fire。 ;There are my old northernlights察─said the reindeer察 see how they flash。; And he ran on dayand night still faster and faster察but the loaves and the ham were alleaten by the time they reached Lapland。

 SIXTH STORY

   THE LAPLAND WOMAN AND

 THE FINLAND WOMAN

They stopped at a little hut察it was very mean looking察the roofsloped nearly down to the ground察and the door was so low that thefamily had to creep in on their hands and knees察when they went in andout。 There was no one at home but an old Lapland woman察who wascooking fish by the light of a train´oil lamp。 The reindeer told herall about Gerda's story察after having first told his own察which seemedto him the most important察but Gerda was so pinched with the cold thatshe could not speak。 ;Oh察you poor things察─said the Lapland woman察you have a long way to go yet。 You must travel more than a hundredmiles farther察to Finland。 The Snow Queen lives there now察and sheburns Bengal lights every evening。 I will write a few words on a driedstock´fish察for I have no paper察and you can take it from me to theFinland woman who lives there察she can give you better informationthan I can。; So when Gerda was warmed察and had taken something toeat and drink察the woman wrote a few words on the dried fish察and toldGerda to take great care of it。 Then she tied her again on thereindeer察and he set off at full speed。 Flash察flash察went thebeautiful blue northern lights in the air the whole night long。 And atlength they reached Finland察and knocked at the chimney of the Finlandwoman's hut察for it had no door above the ground。 They crept in察butit was so terribly hot inside that that woman wore scarcely anyclothes察she was small and very dirty looking。 She loosened littleGerda's dress察and took off the fur boots and the mittens察or Gerdawould have been unable to bear the heat察and then she placed a pieceof ice on the reindeer's head察and read what was written on thedried fish。 After she had read it three times察she knew it by heartso she popped the fish into the soup saucepan察as she knew it was goodto eat察and she never wasted anything。 The reindeer told his own storyfirst察and then little Gerda's察and the Finlander twinkled with herclever eyes察but she said nothing。 ;You are so clever察─said thereindeer察 I know you can tie all the winds of the world with apiece of twine。 If a sailor unties one knot察he has a fair windwhen he unties the second察it blows hard察but if the third andfourth are loosened察then es a storm察which will root up wholeforests。 Cannot you give this little maiden something which willmake her as strong as twelve men察to overe the Snow Queen拭

;The Power of twelve men ─said the Finland woman察 that wouldbe of very little use。; But she went to a shelf and took down andunrolled a large skin察on which were inscribed wonderful charactersand she read till the perspiration ran down from her forehead。 But thereindeer begged so hard for little Gerda察and Gerda looked at theFinland woman with such beseeching tearful eyes察that her own eyesbegan to twinkle again察so she drew the reindeer into a corner察andwhispered to him while she laid a fresh piece of ice on his head察Little Kay is really with the Snow Queen察but he finds everythingthere so much to his taste and his liking察that he believes it isthe finest place in the world察but this is because he has a piece ofbroken glass in his heart察and a little piece of glass in his eye。These must be taken out察or he will never be a human being againand the Snow Queen will retain her power over him。;

;But can you not give little Gerda something to help her toconquer this power拭

;I can give her no greater power than she has already察─said thewoman察 don't you see how strong that is拭How men and animals areobliged to serve her察and how well she has got through the worldbarefooted as she is。 She cannot receive any power from me greaterthan she n
