s got through the worldbarefooted as she is。 She cannot receive any power from me greaterthan she now has察which consists in her own purity and innocence ofheart。 If she cannot herself obtain access to the Snow Queen察andremove the glass fragments from little Kay察we can do nothing tohelp her。 Two miles from here the Snow Queen's garden begins察youcan carry the little girl so far察and set her down by the large bushwhich stands in the snow察covered with red berries。 Do not staygossiping察but e back here as quickly as you can。; Then the Finlandwoman lifted little Gerda upon the reindeer察and he ran away withher as quickly as he could。

;Oh察I have forgotten my boots and my mittens察─cried littleGerda察as soon as she felt the cutting cold察but the reindeer darednot stop察so he ran on till he reached the bush with the redberries察here he set Gerda down察and he kissed her察and the greatbright tears trickled over the animal's cheeks察then he left her andran back as fast as he could。

There stood poor Gerda察without shoes察without gloves察in themidst of cold察dreary察ice´bound Finland。 She ran forwards asquickly as she could察when a whole regiment of snow´flakes cameround her察they did not察however察fall from the sky察which was quiteclear and glittering with the northern lights。 The snow´flakes ranalong the ground察and the nearer they came to her察the larger theyappeared。 Gerda remembered how large and beautiful they looked throughthe burning´glass。 But these were really larger察and much moreterrible察for they were alive察and were the guards of the SnowQueen察and had the strangest shapes。 Some were like greatporcupines察others like twisted serpents with their heads stretchingout察and some few were like little fat bears with their hair bristledbut all were dazzlingly white察and all were living snow´flakes。 Thenlittle Gerda repeated the Lord's Prayer察and the cold was so greatthat she could see her own breath e out of her mouth like steamas she uttered the words。 The steam appeared to increase察as shecontinued her prayer察till it took the shape of little angels who grewlarger the moment they touched the earth。 They all wore helmets ontheir heads察and carried spears and shields。 Their number continued toincrease more and more察and by the time Gerda had finished herprayers察a whole legion stood round her。 They thrust their spears intothe terrible snow´flakes察so that they shivered into a hundred piecesand little Gerda could go forward with courage and safety。 Theangels stroked her hands and feet察so that she felt the cold less察andshe hastened on to the Snow Queen's castle。

But now we must see what Kay is doing。 In truth he thought notof little Gerda察and never supposed she could be standing in the frontof the palace。

 SEVENTH STORY

OF THE PALACE OF THE SNOW QUEEN

AND WHAT HAPPENED THERE AT LAST

The walls of the palace were formed of drifted snow察and thewindows and doors of the cutting winds。 There were more than a hundredrooms in it察all as if they had been formed with snow blowntogether。 The largest of them extended for several miles察they wereall lighted up by the vivid light of the aurora察and they were solarge and empty察so icy cold and glittering There were noamusements here察not even a little bear's ball察when the storm mighthave been the music察and the bears could have danced on their hindlegs察and shown their good manners。 There were no pleasant games ofsnap´dragon察or touch察or even a gossip over the tea´table察for theyoung´lady foxes。 Empty察vast察and cold were the halls of the SnowQueen。 The flickering flame of the northern lights could be plainlyseen察whether they rose high or low in the heavens察from every part ofthe castle。 In the midst of its empty察endless hall of snow was afrozen lake察broken on its surface into a thousand forms察each pieceresembled another察from being in itself perfect as a work of artand in the centre of this lake sat the Snow Queen察when she was athome。 She called the lake ;The Mirror of Reason察─and said that it wasthe best察and indeed the only one in the world。

Little Kay was quite blue with cold察indeed almost black察but hedid not feel it察for the Snow Queen had kissed away the icyshiverings察and his heart was already a lump of ice。 He dragged somesharp察flat pieces of ice to and fro察and placed them together inall kinds of positions察as if he wished to make something out of themjust as we try to form various figures with little tablets of woodwhich we call ;a Chinese puzzle。; Kay's fingers were very artistic察itwas the icy game of reason at which he played察and in his eyes thefigures were very remarkable察and of the highest importance察thisopinion was owing to the piece of glass still sticking in his eye。He posed many plete figures察forming different words察butthere was one word he never could manage to form察although he wishedit very much。 It was the word ;Eternity。; The Snow Queen had said tohim察 When you can find out this察you shall be your own master察andI will give you the whole world and a new pair of skates。; But hecould not acplish it。

;Now I must hasten away to warmer countries察─said the Snow Queen。;I will go and look into the black craters of the tops of theburning mountains察Etna and Vesuvius察as they are called察 I shallmake them look white察which will be good for them察and for thelemons and the grapes。; And away flew the Snow Queen察leaving littleKay quite alone in the great hall which was so many miles in lengthso he sat and looked at his pieces of ice察and was thinking so deeplyand sat so still察that any one might have supposed he was frozen。

Just at this moment it happened that little Gerda came through thegreat door of the castle。 Cutting winds were raging around her察butshe offered up a prayer and the winds sank down as if they weregoing to sleep察and she went on till she came to the large empty halland caught sight of Kay察she knew him directly察she flew to him andthrew her arms round his neck察and held him fast察while she exclaimed察Kay察dear little Kay察I have found you at last。;

But he sat quite still察stiff and cold。

Then little Gerda wept hot tears察which fell on his breast察andperated into his heart察and thawed the lump of ice察and washed awaythe little piece of glass which had stuck there。 Then he looked ather察and she sang´

 ;Roses bloom and cease to be

  But we shall the Christ´child see。;

Then Kay burst into tears察and he wept so that the splinter ofglass swam out of his eye。 Then he recognized Gerda察and saidjoyfully察 Gerda察dear little Gerda察where have you been all thistime察and where have I been拭─And he looked all around him察andsaid察 How cold it is察and how large and empty it all looks察─and heclung to Gerda察and she laughed and wept for joy。 It was so pleasingto see them that the pieces of ice even danced about察and when theywere tired and went to lie down察they formed themselves into theletters of the word which the Snow Queen had said he must find outbefore he could be his own master察and have the whole world and a pairof new skates。 Then Gerda kissed his cheeks察and they became bloomingand she kissed his eyes察and they shone like her own察she kissed hishands and his feet察and then he became quite healthy and cheerful。 TheSnow Queen might e home now when she pleased察for there stood hiscertainty of freedom察in the word she wanted察written in shiningletters of ice。

Then they took each other by the hand察and went forth from thegreat palace of ice。 They spoke of the grandmother察and of the roseson the roof察and as they went on the winds were at rest察and the sunburst forth。 When they arrived at the bush with red berries察therestood the reindeer waiting for them察and he had brought anotheryoung reindeer with him察whose udders were full察and the childrendrank her warm milk and kissed her on the mouth。 Then they carried Kayand Gerda first to the Finland woman察where they warmed themselvesthoroughly in the hot room察and she gave them directions about theirjourney home。 Next they went to the Lapland woman察who had made somenew clothes for them察and put their sleighs in order。 Both thereindeer ran by their side察and followed them as far as the boundariesof the country察where the first green leaves were budding。 And herethey took leave of the two reindeer and the Lapland woman察and allsaid´ Farewell。 Then the birds began to twitter察and the forest toowas full of green young leaves察and out of it came a beautifulhorse察which Gerda remembered察for it was one which had drawn thegolden coach。 A young girl was riding upon it察with a shining redcap on her head察and pistols in her belt。 It was the littlerobber´maiden察who had got tired of staying at home察she was goingfirst to the north察and if that did not suit her察she meant to trysome other part of the world。 She knew Gerda directly察and Gerdaremembered her此it was a joyful meeting。

;You are a fine fellow to go gadding about in this way察─saidshe to little Kay察 I should like to know whether you deserve that anyone should go to the end of the world to find you。;

But Gerda patted her cheeks察and asked after the prince andprincess。

;They are gone to foreign countries察─said the robber´girl。

;And the crow拭─asked Gerda。

;Oh察the crow is dead察─she replied察 his tame sweetheart is now awidow察and wears a bit of black worsted round her leg。 She mourns verypitifully察but it is all stuff。 But now tell me how you managed to gethim back。;

Then Gerda and Kay told her all about it。

;Snip察snap察snare it's all right at last察─said the robber´girl。

Then she took both their hands察and promised that if ever sheshould pass through the town察she would call and pay them a visit。 Andthen she rode away into the wide world。 But Gerda and Kay wenthand´in´hand towards home察and as they advanced察spring appearedmore lovely with its green verdure and its beautiful flowers。 Verysoon they recognized the large town where they lived察and the tallsteeples of the churches察in which the sweet bells were ringing amerry peal as they entered it察and found their way to theirgrandmother's door。 They went upstairs into the little room察where alllooked just as it used to do。 The old clock was going ;tick察tick察and the hands pointed to the time of day察but as they passed throughthe door into the room they perceived that they were both grown upand bee a man and woman。 The roses out on the roof were in fullbloom察and peeped in at the window察and there stood the little chairson which they had sat when children察and Kay and Gerda seatedthemselves each on their own chair察and held each other by the handwhile the cold empty grandeur of the Snow Queen's palace vanished fromtheir memories like a painful dream。 The grandmother sat in God'sbright sunshine察and she read aloud from the Bible察 Except yebee as little children察ye shall in no wise enter into thekingdom of God。; And Kay and Gerda looked into each other's eyesand all at once understood the words of the old song

;Roses bloom and cease to be

 But we shall the Christ´child see。;And they both sat there察grown up察yet children at heart察and it wassummer察 warm察beautiful summer。

 FAIRY TALES OF HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN

  THE SNOWDROP

   by Hans Christian Andersen

IT was winter´time察the air was cold察the wind was sharp察butwithin the closed doors it was warm and fortable察and within theclosed door lay the flower察it lay in the bulb under thesnow´covered earth。

One day rain fell。 The drops perated through the snowy coveringdown into the earth察and touched the flower´bulb察and talked of thebright world above。 Soon the Sunbeam pierced its way through thesnow to the root察and within the root there was a stirring。

;e in察─said the flower。

;I cannot察─said the Sunbeam。 ;I am not strong enough to unlockthe door When the summer es I shall be strong

;When will it be summer拭─asked the Flower察and she repeatedthis question each time a new sunbeam made its way down to her。 Butthe summer was yet far distant。 The snow still lay upon the groundand there was a coat of ice on the water every night。

;What a long time it takes what a long time it takes ─said theFlower。 ;I feel a stirring and striving within me察I must stretchmyself察I must unlock the door察I must get out察and must nod a goodmorning to the summer察and what a happy time that will be

And the Flower stirred and stretched itself within the thin rindwhich the water had softened from without察and the snow and theearth had warmed察and the Sunbeam had knocked at察and it shot forthunder the snow with a greenish´white blossom on a green stalk察withnarrow thick leaves察which seemed to want to protect it。 The snowwas cold察but was pierced by the Sunbeam察therefore it was easy to getthrough it察and now the Sunbeam came with greater strength thanbefore。

;Wele察wele ─sang and sounded every ray察and the Flowerlifted itself up over the snow into the brighter world。 The Sunbeamscaressed and kissed it察so that it opened altogether察white as snowand ornamented with green stripes。 It bent its head in joy andhumility。

;Beautiful Flower ─said the Sunbeams察 how graceful anddelicate you are You are the first察you are the only one You are ourlove You are the bell that rings out for summer察beautiful summerover country and town。 All the snow will melt察the cold winds willbe driven away察we shall rule察all will bee green察and then youwill have panions察syringas察laburnums察and roses察but you arethe first察so graceful察so delicate

That was a great pleasure。 It seemed as if the air were singingand sounding察as if rays of light were piercing through the leaves andthe stalks of the Flower。 There it stood察so delicate and so easilybroken察and yet so strong in its young beauty察it stood there in itswhite dress with the green stripes察and made a summer。 But there was along time yet to the summer´time。 Clouds hid the sun察and bleakwinds were blowing。

;You have e too early察─said Wind and Weather。 ;We have stillthe power察and you shall feel it察and give it up to us。 You shouldhave stayed quietly at home and not have run out to make a displayof yourself。 Your time is not e yet

It was a cutting cold The days which now e brought not asingle sunbeam。 It was weather that might break such a little Flowerin two with cold。 But the Flower had more strength than she herselfknew of。 She was strong in joy and in faith in the summer察which wouldbe sure to e察which had been announced by her deep longing andconfirmed by the warm sunlight察and so she remained standing inconfidence in the snow in her white garment察bending her head evenwhile the snow´flakes fell thick and heavy察and the icy winds sweptover her。

;You'll break ─they said察 and fade察and fade What did youwant out here拭Why did you let yourself be tempted拭The Sunbeam onlymade game of you。 Now you have what you deserve察you summer gauk。; ;Summer gauk ─she repeated in the cold morning hour。

;O summer gauk ─cried some children rejoicingly察 yonder standsone´ how beautiful察how beautiful The first one察the only one

These words did the Flower so much good察they seemed to her likewarm sunbeams。 In her joy the Flower did not even feel when it wasbroken off。 It lay in a child's hand察and was kissed by a child'smouth察and carried into a warm room察and looked on by gentle eyes察andput into water。 How
