I drew the backside from memory察 my hand stopped on its own to let the
bristles of the brush sip from the inkwell。 I was quite content while rendering
the rump察 and the forceful and protruding hindquarters察 I was pletely
engrossed in the picture。 I seemed to be standing beside the horse I was
drawing as I joyously began the tail。 This was a war steed察a racehorse察making
a knot of its tail and winding it around察I exuberantly moved upward察as I was
drawing the dock and buttocks I felt a pleasant coolness on my own ass and
anus。 Pleased by that feeling察I gleefully pleted the splendid softness of the
rump察the left hind leg that was slightly behind the right察and then the hooves。
I was astonished by the horse I¨d drawn and by my hand察which had rendered
the elegant positioning of the left foreleg exactly as I had conceived it。
I lifted my hand from the page and quickly drew the fiery察sorrowful eyes察
with but a moment¨s hesitation察I made the nostrils and the saddle blanket。 I
hatched in the mane strand by strand察 as if tenderly bing it with my
fingers。 I fitted the beast with stirrups察 added a white blaze to his forehead
and finished him off properly by eagerly察 measuredly察 yet in full proportion
drawing his balls and cock。
When I draw a magnificent horse察I bee that magnificent horse。

I AM CALLED ^BUTTERFLY ̄

I believe it was about the time of the evening prayer。 Someone was at the door。
He explained that the Sultan had announced a petition。 As you mand察
my dear Sultan察indeed察who could draw a more beautiful horse than I拭
It gave me pause察however察when I learned that the picture was to be made
without color in the black´ink style。 Why no colors拭 Because I happen to be
the best in the selection and application of them拭 Who would judge which
illustration was best拭 I tried to get more information out of the broad´
shouldered察pink´lipped察pretty boy who¨d e from the palace察and was able
to infer that Head Illuminator Master Osman was behind this contest。 Master
Osman察 without a doubt察 knows my talent and likes me the best of all the
masters。
So察as I gazed at the empty page察the stance察look and demeanor of a horse
that would please both the Sultan and Master Osman came to life before my
eyes。 The horse ought to be lively察but serious察like the horses Master Osman
made ten years ago察and it should be rearing察in the way that always pleased
Our Sultan察so that both of them would concur on the horse¨s beauty。 How
many gold pieces are they offering察I wonder拭How would Mir Musavvir make
this picture拭How would Bihzad拭
Suddenly察the beast entered my thoughts with such speed察that by the time
I understood what it was察my damnable hand grabbed the brush and began to
draw a miraculous horse beyond anyone¨s conception察starting from the raised
left foreleg。 After quickly joining the leg to the body察I made two arcs swiftly察
pleasurably and confidently!had you seen them察you would¨ve said this artist
is no illustrator察but a calligrapher。 I was gazing at my hand with awe察while it
moved as if it belonged to another。 These spectacular arcs became the horse¨s
ample stomach察solid chest and swanlike neck。 The illustration might¨ve been
considered plete。 Oh察 the talent of which I am possessed Meanwhile察 I
looked to see that my hand had traced out the nose and open mouth of the
strong and joyful horse and laid down the intelligent forehead and ears。 Next察
once again察 look Mother察 how beautiful察 I merrily drew another arc as if
scripting a letter察and I was moved to the verge of laughter。 I swooped down in
a perfect arc from the neck of my rearing horse to its saddle。 My hand
occupied itself with the saddle as I proudly regarded my horse察 now ing
into being察with a robust察rounded body not unlike my own此Everyone will be
stunned by this horse。 I thought about the sweet ments Our Sultan would
make when I won the prize察He¨d present me with a purse of gold coins察and I
300

had the urge to laugh again as I imagined how I¨d count them at home。 Just
then察my hand察which I gazed at out of the corner of my eye察finished with the
saddle and took my brush to the inkwell and back before I began the horse¨s
rump with a chuckle as though I¨d told a joke。 I briskly outlined the tail。 How
gentle and curvaceous I made the rear end察lovingly wishing to cup it in my
hands like the gentle butt of a boy I was about to violate。 As I smiled察my clever
hand finished with the hind legs察and my brush stopped此This was the finest
rearing horse the world had ever known。 I was overe with joy察 happily
thinking about how much they would like my horse察how they would declare
me the most talented of miniaturists and even how they would announce at
once that I was to bee Head Illuminator察but then I considered what else
those idiots would say此 How quickly and joyfully he¨s drawn this 院 For this
reason alone察 I was worried they wouldn¨t take my wonderful illustration
seriously。 Therefore察I meticulously rendered the mane察nostrils察teeth察strands
of horsetail and saddle blanket in minute detail so there would be no doubt
that I had indeed labored over the illustration。 From this position察that is察the
rear lateral view察 the horse¨s testicles should¨ve been visible察 but I left them
out because they might unduly preoccupy the women。 Proudly察I studied my
horse此rearing察moving like a tempest察strong and powerful It was as if a wind
had kicked up and set elliptical brush strokes in motion察 like the letters in a
line of script察 yet the animal was also poised。 They¨d praise the magnificent
miniaturist who drew this illustration as if praising a Bihzad or a Mir
Musavvir察and then察I察too察would be like them。
When I draw a magnificent horse察I bee a great master of old drawing
that horse。

I AM CALLED ^STORK ̄

After the evening prayers I intended to go to the coffeehouse察but they told me
there was a visitor at the door。 Good tidings察 I hoped。 I went to discover a
messenger from the palace。 He described the Sultan¨s contest。 Fine察 the
world¨s most beautiful horse。 You tell me how much you¨ll offer for each察and
I¨ll quickly draw you five or six of them。
Rather than say any such thing察 I maintained my reserve察 and simply
invited the boy waiting at the door inside。 I thought for a moment此 The
world¨s most beautiful horse doesn¨t even exist that I might draw it。 I can
draw war steeds察 large Mongolian horses察 noble Arabians察 heroic察 writhing
chargers covered in blood察 or even luckless packhorses pulling a cartfull of
stone to a building site察but no one would call any of them the world¨s most
beautiful horse。 Naturally察by ^the world¨s most beautiful horse察院I knew that
Our Sultan meant the most splendid of the horses that had been depicted
thousands of times in Persia察in keeping with all of the formulas察models and
poses of yore。 But why拭
Of course察there were those who didn¨t want me to win the purse of gold。 If
they¨d told me to draw your average horse察 it¨s mon knowledge that
nobody¨s picture could pete with mine。 Who was it that had duped Our
Sultan拭Our Sovereign察despite the endless gossip of all of those jealous artists察
knows full well that I am the most talented of His miniaturists。 He admires my
illustrations。
My hand abruptly and angrily sprang to action as if wanting to rise above
all of these vexing considerations察and in one concentrated effort察I drew a true
horse beginning from the tip of its hoof。 You might see one like this on the
street or in battle。 Weary察 but controlled´Next察 in the same fit of anger察 I
dashed off a spahi cavalryman¨s horse察and this one was even better。 None of
the miniaturists of the book arts workshop could draw such beautiful animals。
I was about to draw another from memory when the boy from the palace said察
^One is enough。 ̄
He was about to grab the sheet and leave察 but I restrained him because I
knew full well察as I know my own name察that these scoundrels would be giving
up a purse of gold coins for these horses。
If I illustrate the way I want to察they won¨t give me the gold If I can¨t win
the gold察my name will be tarnished forever。 I stopped to think。 ^Just wait察院I
said to the boy。 I went inside and returned with two incredibly shiny
302

counterfeit Veian gold pieces察which I proceeded to give to the boy此He was
afraid察his eyes widened。 ^You¨re as brave as a lion察院I said。
I removed one of the notebooks of forms that I kept hidden from the eyes
of the world。 This is where I secretly made copies of the most beautiful
illustrations that I¨d seen over the years。 Not to mention the copies that the
chief of the dwarfs察 Jafer察 in the treasury would make of the best trees察
dragons察birds察hunters and warriors from the pages of volumes locked away察
that is察if you gave him ten gold pieces察the rogue。 My notebook is excellent察
not for those who want to see the actual world in which they live through
pictures and decoration察but for those who want to recall the fables of old。
Flipping through the pages while showing the images to the pageboy察 I
selected the best of the horses。 I briskly poked holes over the lines of that
picture with a needle。 Next察I placed a clean sheet of paper under the stencil。 I
gradually sprinkled a liberal amount of coal dust on top察then shook it so the
dust would pass through the holes。 I lifted the stencil。 The coal dust察dot by
dot察 had transferred the beautiful horse¨s entire shape to the sheet below。 It
was a pleasure to behold。
I grabbed my pen。 With an inspiration that suddenly welled up within me察I
elegantly connected the dots with quick and decisive strokes察such that as I was
drawing the horse¨s belly察 graceful neck察 nose and rump察 I lovingly felt the
horse within me。 ^There it is察院I said。 ^The world¨s most beautiful horse。 Not
one of those fools could draw this。 ̄
So the boy from the palace would believe this as well察and so he wouldn¨t
explain to Our Sultan how I¨d been inspired to draw this picture察I gave him
three more counterfeit coins。 I implied that I would give him even more if I
ended up winning the gold。 Furthermore察he also imagined察I believe察that he
might soon be able to catch sight of my wife once again察whom he¨d leered at
open´mouthed。 There are many who believe you can tell a good miniaturist by
the horse he draws察 however察 to be the best miniaturist察 it¨s not enough to
make the best horse察 you must also convince Our Sultan and His circle of
sycophants that you are indeed the best miniaturist。
When I draw a magnificent horse察I am who I am察nothing more。

I WILL BE CALLED A MURDERER

Were you able to determine who I am from the way I sketched a horse拭
As soon as I heard I was invited to make a horse察 I knew this was no
petition此They wanted to catch me through my illustration。 I¨m perfectly
aware that the horse sketches I¨d drawn on rough paper were found on poor
Elegant Effendi¨s body。 But I have no fault or style by which they might
discover me through the horses I¨ve made。 Though I was as certain of this as I
could be察 I was in a panic while rendering the horse。 Had I done something
incriminating when I made the horse for Enishte拭I had to depict a new horse
this time。 I thought of pletely different things。 I ^restrained ̄ myself and
became another。
But who am I拭Am I an artist who would suppress the masterpieces I was
capable of in order to fit the style of the workshop or an artist who would one
day triumphantly depict the horse deep within himself拭
Suddenly and with terror察I felt the existence of that triumphant miniaturist
within me。 It was as if I were being watched by another soul察and察in short察I
was ashamed。
I quickly knew that I wouldn¨t be able to remain at home察 and bolting
outside察 I walked briskly down the darkened streets。 As Sheikh Osman Baba
wrote in his Lives of the Saints察 in order for a genuine wandering dervish to
escape the devil within察 he must roam his entire life without remaining
anywhere too long。 After roaming from city to city for sixty´seven years察 he
tired of running and surrendered to the Devil。 This is the age when master
miniaturists attain blindness察 or the darkness of Allah察 the age when they
involuntarily achieve a style察 while freeing themselves of all intimations of
style。
I wandered through the Chicken´Sellers Market in Bayazid察 through the
empty square of the slave market察 amid the pleasant aromas of soup and
pudding shops察 as if searching。 I passed the closed doors of barbershops察
clothes pressers察an old bread baker who was counting his money and looking
at me in surprise察I passed a grocer¨s shop smelling of pickles and salted fish察
and since my eyes were taken only by colors察I walked into a herbs and notions
shop where something was being weighed察and in the light of a lamp察stared
passionately察the way one looks at one¨s beloved察at the sacks of coffee察ginger察
saffron and cinnamon察 the colorful cans of gum mastic察 the aniseed whose
scent wafted from the counter察 and at mounds of brown and black cumin。

Sometimes I want to put everything into my mouth察sometimes I want to fill a
page with a picture of all creation。
I walked into the place where I¨d filled my stomach twice before in the last
week察which I¨d personally named the ^soup kitchen of the downtrodden ̄!
actually察of the ^miserable ̄ would¨ve been more appropriate。 It was open until
midnight to those who knew about it。 Inside were a few unfortunates dressed
like horse thieves or like men who¨d escaped the gallows察a couple of pathetic
characters whose sorrow and hopelessness caused their sights to slip from this
world to distant paradises察as happens with opium addicts察two beggars who
were at pains to follow even basic guild etiquette察 and a young gentleman
who¨d seated himself in a corner at a distance from this crowd。 I gave the
Aleppan cook a graceful greeting。 Heaping the meat´filled cabbage dolma into
my bowl察I covered it with yogurt and topped it off with handfuls of hot red
pepper flakes before taking a seat beside the young gentleman。
Every night a sorrow overwhelms me察a misery descends upon me。 Oh察my
brothers察my dear brothers察we¨re being poisoned察we¨re rotting察dying察we¨re
exhausting ourselves as we l
